We are committed to building power and creating change through an approach called ‘community organising’. This is a form of community capacity building that aims to strengthen the capacity of ordinary people to effect change. Community organisers listen to people’s concerns, build teams of people to take action on the issues that are important to them and train people to be more effective change-makers and organisers themselves. Citizens UK is the home of broad-based organising in the UK (an approach that builds local alliances from civil society organisations) and we are a member of both South London Citizens and Telco. We also work in partnership with Community Organisers Ltd who fund and support our social action hub in east London through which we have trained over 150 people in community organising. Both these partnerships help our participants can access further training, get involved in campaigns in their local area or obtain support with their own campaigns if they so wish. We also use organising techniques inside the classroom to critically explore issues, to build relationships and to plan and evaluate action.
