Communities, Language and Integration: The story of a project

Join Learning Unlimited and English for Action at The Foundry (17 Oval Way London SE11 5RR) as we celebrate the work of the Communities, Language and Integration Project (CLIP), part funded by the EU Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund.

Hear from learners who have benefitted from the project and had their stories and poems published, hear from volunteers who have helped run our online conversation clubs, and hear from staff about the unique challenges of running a multi-year ESOL project with a pandemic in the middle of it.

Workshop programme throughout the day sharing key learning and practice from the project:

Participatory photography and creative writing in the ESOL classroom
Taking and sharing photos supports language learning, builds community and can be a catalyst for powerful creative writing, including poetry, for all levels.
Come and find out more and try out an activity or two.

Volunteer-run conversation clubs
Volunteers have played a key role in the CLIP project, particularly in hosting conversation clubs. Come along and find out more about what they did, what worked well and get some ideas for setting up your own conversation clubs.

Community Organising
This workshop will help ESOL teachers learn about community organising (CO) and how they can train their students in CO methods. Community organising is about building the capacity of ordinary people to effect change. Participants will learn about the importance of deep listening to community organising and how to do it and train their students to do it.

Online teaching tips for teachers
Making online learning engaging and interactive can be a challenge. Tat and Katie share strategies for teaching online and creating vibrant learning communities. You’ll leave with an improved understanding of Padlet, Flip and WhatsApp and practical ideas to embed in your teaching.
