ESOL Teacher Training: Our Languages
Our Languages was a classroom research project carried out in two London ESOL classrooms. In this project we used participatory approaches to begin to develop a multilingual ESOL pedagogy where students focus not only on English but on their whole repertoire of linguistic resources. By doing this we aimed to counter the monolingual
bias in the ESOL and ELT curricula. This workshop will use some of the teaching resources we produced as a result of this project and will help teachers use these resources in their
classroom. It will outline sociolinguistic concepts that informed the research and the materials including communicative repertoire, language discrimination, linguistic inequality, language ideologies and heritage language transmission. It will also explore how to use students’ multilingual skills in ESOL activities and explore political reasons behind this shift alongside the benefits and challenges of this. The workshop will include
a good balance of theory and practice and will equip participants with the necessary tools,
understandings and resources to do their own 6-10 session Our Languages course.
